What Components Require T-Bolt Fastening?
Any part or component that needs to be secured to the frame of a 3D printer or other equipment based on aluminum profiles may require fastening with T-bolts. Commonly, T-bolts are used to secure:
- Extruders
- Motors and sensors
- Protective covers and ventilation housings
- Clips and wire holders
- Additional components
How Do T-Bolts Differ from Other Bolts?
T-bolts are specifically designed for use with aluminum profiles that have T-slots, such as the V-slot profile 20x20 or 20x40, which are commonly utilized in many 3D printers. Regular bolts do not have this T-shaped head and cannot be used in such profiles without special nuts.
How to Choose the Right T-Bolt?
Refer to your printer's documentation to identify which holes or slots are used in your aluminum profile. You can also easily measure the profile and its slot using a regular ruler, as high precision is not necessary. Select a T-bolt that fits into the slot of the aluminum profile but does not fall out. The most common sizes are M4, M5, M6, and M8.
The thread pitch is also important for compatibility with the nuts you will be using. Ensure that the T-bolts have the correct thread pitch for your components. Typically, the thread pitch for standard T-bolts is 0.8 mm, with other variations being rare.
The length of the threaded portion of the T-bolt should be sufficient for securely fastening components but not excessively long. Consider the thickness of the profile and how deep the T-bolt needs to enter the slot, as well as the height of the nut. Order T-bolts with thread lengths appropriate for your specific situation. For example, M5x0.8x20 indicates that the T-bolt has a thread diameter of 5 millimeters, a thread pitch of 0.8 millimeters, and a thread length of 20 millimeters.
